The Danzhou City, first formed in 110 BC, historically named as Dan’er County, is one of the two ancient counties with the earliest establishment in Hainan Island. It is located in the northwest of Hainan Island, and adjacent to the Beibu Gulf. The city has a tenth the land, one ninth of the coastline, and one eighth of the population (area of 3,400 square kilometers and coastline of 267km, and population of 1.04 million) in the province. The jurisdiction of Danzhou covers a total of 16 towns, and 4 state-owned farms, and its geographical location is at the core area where modern new industries are developed in Hainan, and its economic development forms three pillars together with Haikou and Sanya. The remarkable state-level development zone - Yangpu Economic Development Zone, the country's fourth bonded port - Yangpu Bonded Harbor Area, and the Hainan University Danzhou campus and the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture boasting powerful strength in science and education are located in the territory .

The ancient Danzhou had profound cultural background and powerful cultural quality. Nurtured by history and culture, many Danzhou people can chant poem, write couplets, and sing and dance. Danzhou was dubbed as the Poetry Village, the Chinese Couplets Town, the China's Rural Folk Art and the Poetry Village Song Sea. During festivals, especially the annual August 15 of the lunar calendar, young men and women will wear festive costumes, and line up to perform voicing and antiphonal singing with strong local characteristics, adding to the lively atmosphere of the festival.

Danzhou has a long history, but also abundant natural resources, including reserves of quartz sands, oil shale, granite, lignite, clay and other minerals. With excellent water quality and many bays, Danzhou becomes a ground producing sea cucumber, red snapper, squid, Greenfield bighead fish, squid, grouper, shrimp and other aquatic products. Thanks to its suitable climate, Danzhou becomes well known for its tropical fruits e.g. banana, lychee, jackfruit, and dragon fruit.

Danzhou has tropical oceanic monsoon climate, featuring summer without heat and winter without cold, abundant sunshine, mild climate, average annual temperature of 23.3℃, average annual rainfall of 1800-2000 mm, and less influence by tropical storms and typhoons. The city is the area suffering little to no influence from typhoon in Hainan Province.

Danzhou is China’s excellent tourist city, boasting abundant tourism resources. Tourist attractions such as the Dongpo Academy, the Songtao Reservoir, the Bayi Water Tunnel, the Hainan Tropical Botanical Garden, the Lanyang Cold & Hot Spring, the Guangcun Silver Beach, the Millennium Ancient salt fields, the Egrets Heaven, and the Cigar-Style Town are all very inviting and indulging.
